Houston Hispanic chamber of commerce, a great Texas development partner , says leadership .
Dr Laura Murillo , president and C.E.O of the Houston Hispanic Chambers of Commerce and the Chairman of the organization , Hector Pineda joined Texas Governor Greg Abbot , Harris county Judge Lina Hildago and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner in welcoming thousands of dignified guests at the Hilton Americas ball room down Town for the 2019 annual Luncheon and expo of the chambers .
After the national anthem , and the invocation , mayor Turner addressed the gathering , appreciating the leadership of the chambers and its contributions to the job creation and economic growth of his city .
Mayor Turner advised Houstonians to register in the up coming census 2020 and be counted . He said you need not be a registered migrant to let the city know of your presence , assuring them that he is the mayor for all .
Chamber president Murillo, armed with statistics or data , showed the contributions of the Hispanic community in the building of the economy of Houston ,Harris county , Texas and the USA . She regretted why few Hispanics are in the corporate boards of the majority of Houston and Harris county . She said only 13 of the 275 corporate board members of the fortune 500 companies in Texas were of Hispanic descent , just around 5% of the total , calling the companies to do more .
Dr Laura Murillo attributed most of the hundreds of billions of trade dollars coming to the Houston and Texas economies through business with Mexico as the benefits of NAFTA which she said must be retained .
Judge Hildago spoke on the benefits of community mobilization and partnership in leadership , as she explained what the Saturday civic meetings she carries out are all about .
She emphasized participatory leadership .
Governor Abbot thanked the Hispanic community for his Latino wife , and narrated how his early start in Houston in the law and judicial sector helped him after the accident that left him half broken , not knowing how he was going to provide for his family and make progress in his profession . He acknowledged the contributions of Houston and Houstonians for his recovery and resilience , that led him to becoming governor . He placed Houston and Harris county at the center of the great jobs and wealth creation in Texas.
He passionately said he was working to make teachers eligible for six figure salaries through excellence in out put .
Police chief of Houston Aceveda and Fire chief were also recognized for the good work they do in Houston .
The sponsors for the event where the University of Houston Down Town , Chevron and the Port Of Houston .
About 100 vendors were in place to exhibit their products and services in what is called the largest business luncheon and expo in Houston .
