Houston schools entered the phase of in person learning on Monday October 19th 2020.

Students in the Houston independent school district under the interim leadership of Dr Lanthan returned to in person schooling on Monday 19th ,2020 after schools resumed virtually in August of 2019 virtually.
The 2020-2021 academic year theme is "Reopening Safely, Return Strong ", emphasizing the safety of the students, teachers and staff of the schools within the Houston school district.
The reopening plan for the academic year 2020-2021 has made provisions for parents to opt out completely from the in person schooling for the year and have their child and children attend school completely online .The interim president said computers have been provided to all high school students in the school district , and internet hotspots for the use of all.
The president was speaking in a press conference held on the 19th of October 2020, the morning of start of in person schooling at the Highlands Heights elementary school . President Lantam was introduced by the principal of the schol who thanked the state and city leaders and the foundation that made the digital resources for the school possible with the help of Harris county commissioner Rodney Ellis who was present .
Mayor Sylvester Turner especially acknowledged the hard work the leadership of HISD has put in during these COVID19 challenging times. He thanked the teachers and staff for their frontline work in the education sector affected adversely by Covid19.
The other speakers including US congress woman Sheiler Jackson Lee echoed the sentiments of the previous speakers.
The HISD president thanked the board of trustees for their governance and policies, which were translated into the 2020-2021 academic year plan .
