The president of Lulac Houston , a Latino national advocacy and civil rights organization with a branch in Houston, today the 19th of January 2022 made a strong case at the council meeting at city hall down town, calling for more City councilors from the Latino community to reflect the size of the Latino population, which he said was 1/3 the general population both in Houston and nationally .
The Lulac president said the is only one Latino council person in the City council who is doing a great job bwhile asking ng that the numbers be increased by redistricting the city so that about 4 Latino districts are in Houston out of which will come more Latino City councilors .
The Lulac president of the Houston chapter said only Houston has at large city councilors among the large cities in Texas and should therefore do away with the at large city councilors and redistrict the city , creating more council district within the areas where Latinos growth is enormous as indicated by the 2020 census.
The reguested changes will require a city charter amendments which is not supported by all councilors .
